Like She'll Always Be

There was the fresh scent of cookies in the air, and rolling over in bed, Roo nuzzled into the warmth of his pillow, reaching up with both arms to cuddle his pillow and snuggle down in it. Trying to cling to his slowly slipping away dreams, the male finally relinquished hold on the realm of dreams and allowed himself to wake up. There were the sounds of movement outside his door, and sitting up, he scratched at his temple, wondering just what was going on. Swinging legs out of the bed, the duvet slipping away, the still sleepy male moved from his bedroom, intent on finding out what was going on.

He'd come home for the Christmas season, always happy to spend the merry season with his family. Plus, it was his father's birthday, and he didn't want to miss that.

Bare feet trudged down the hallway, passing his parent's bedroom and the door that lead down to Bailee's now rarely ever used room. The wooden flooring was cold beneath his feet, but soon they hit the warm rug on the lounge floor. Blue eyes wandered around the room, finding his father seated on the leather couch reading a book. "Why can I smell cookies?" he asked the man.

"David is baking," Al replied simply, not looking up from his book. There was a clatter in the kitchen and the sound of two distinct voices. "Annual bake-off" was added once the noises quietened down in the kitchen.

"Sebastian's here?"

"They thought it best to use my kitchen this year, since last year they used his. They usually do it around summertime, but thought that they'd leave it until Christmas to bake," Reuben's father explained casually.

Roo idly scratched at his bare stomach. "Is Julie here yet? She used to play judge, right?"

"We're taking them to the party tonight instead,"

Grin spread upon sleepy features as Ben remembered the party at the Stewart's that was becoming something of a regular event every year. Jon usually cooked most of the food, and guests sometimes brought things along. It seemed that this year there'd be a little more choice than Jonathan's dessert selection.

Alastar closed the book, keeping his thumb in place so that he didn't loose where he was in the book, and looked up at his son. "Are we going to be putting some clothes on since we have guests?"

His son just beamed a lazy smile at him, ran fingers through his long brown hair and shrugged. "Nah, not like I've got anything Sebastian hasn't seen before." His grin faded, and Roo moved closer to his father, sitting down beside him on the couch. "You like Morgan, right?"

Brow arched carefully, Al unsure what sort of direction his son was planning on taking the conversation, but decided to answer him nonetheless. "He's a good friend of mine, why?"

Reuben pressed on. "You've known his kids for a long time, and they're like family, aren't they?"

"I find it hard to see where this conversation is leading, Reuben."

Roo sighed softly, leaning back into the soft leather cushions of his father's couch. "You know that for a while now, I've flirted with them both. Christian is about as sexually active as a rock, but lately, it feels different with Isobel."

"Maybe that's because she's a girl, and now that she's much older the thought of casual flirting with her just doesn't feel the same?" suggested Al. "You may get your tips from David, but it's me you take after, and there's more to us than meets the eye."

"Dad, you have the sexual energy of a dead hedgehog."

Al tsked at his son, shaking his head lightly. "Just because I don't try to get my leg over every ten seconds does not mean I have a lesser sex drive than a hormonal teenager."

"Like I said; dead hedgehog," Roo replied, giving his father a lopsided smirk. "But, anyway, back to the important thing. I think that maybe there might be something going on between Izzy and I, something different. Like, maybe, just joking around with her isn't enough. I actually want to go out with her."
